Porsche Clutch Issue

How to Know When Your Porsche’s Clutch is Worn Out

Your Porsche will probably get a lot of wear and tear because let’s face it – These vehicles are amazing to drive. A lot of that hard use is going to be from simply shifting gears, so how do you know when your Porsche’s clutch is starting to wear out?

Typically, you’ll know – there might be difficulty in shifting gears, a change in clutch pedal pressure, or even odd vibrations and slipping. Let’s take a look at each of these so that you’ll recognize them and know exactly what comes next!

Signs And Symptoms To Watch For

Below are the most common symptoms associated with clutch issues that you should watch for with your Porsche. We’ll elaborate a bit on each in the sections to follow:

  • Difficulty shifting gears
  • Odd vibrations
  • Grinding and other noises
  • Slipping clutch
  • Clutch pedal pressure

Difficulty shifting gears

One common symptom of clutch issues is your gears getting a little harder to shift. Sometimes you will only notice this when you are changing into higher gears, but any change in your ease of shifting is not a quirk – It’s a symptom!

Odd vibrations

Do you notice your clutch vibrating a little lately when you go to shift? If you do, then this could be a sign that the clutch disc is warped or otherwise compromised and a closer look is warranted.

Grinding and other noises

Sometimes when the clutch is going out you’ll notice a lot of grinding when you shift gears. This is called ‘clutch drag’, and what’s happening is the clutch is not disengaging properly when you go to shift, producing that awful grinding noise from your gearbox.

This will usually start as a slow, or difficult period of changing your gears, but it can progress quickly, and that difficulty shifting (and especially the grinding) needs to be addressed right away before it can get worse.

Slipping clutch

Sometimes you’ll go to shift gears, see your engine RPM values fly up on the dashboard, but only feel a slight lurch that doesn’t resemble the power you were expecting at all! This is a slipping clutch and another common sign that a clutch inspection is in order as soon as you can get one.

Clutch pedal pressure

Your clutch pedal has a certain amount of pressure that you’ve come to expect from it. Mind you, it certainly loosens a little once you’ve been driving your Porsche for awhile, but if it starts to feel soft then it could be a sign that your clutch is wearing out.

If it’s not the clutch, then it might be a problem with the hydraulic system, but it’s going to need to be checked in order to determine the root cause and get your Porsche back into its default high-performance state.

These are just a few of the most common symptoms that your clutch is going out, but any of them are enough to warrant a visit to the shop. What’s more, you want to make sure that you go to a full-service shop that knows their way around Porsches specifically – After all, you don’t want just anybody poking under the hood!
